These are measures built into healthcare facility design to reduce the likelihood of HCW, patient/resident and visitor exposure to viable airborne M. tuberculosis. They reduce the number of infectious particles in the air by ventilation, high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration and/or disinfection using ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI). It is important that engineering controls be regularly checked to ensure that they meet recommendations.27
